FLORIDA — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced Friday that he plans to meet with US President Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday to discuss progress toward a peace deal aimed at ending Russia’s nearly four-year war in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters, Zelensky emphasized the cautious optimism surrounding the talks, noting that while a final agreement was not guaranteed, both sides would seek to “finalize as much as we can”. Earlier in the day, the Ukrainian leader posted on X (formerly Twitter), expressing hope that “a lot can be decided before the New Year.”
Peace Plan Details
Zelensky revealed that a 20-point peace plan, developed by Ukrainian and US officials, is reportedly “90% ready.” The plan covers key issues including territorial security, international guarantees, and frameworks for post-conflict reconstruction. Zelensky indicated that the meeting with Trump would focus on ensuring Ukraine’s future security guarantees from its allies.
“We have worked intensively with our US partners to craft a plan that protects our sovereignty while offering a pathway to peace,” Zelensky told reporters.
However, Zelensky cautioned that the plan’s reception by Russia remained uncertain, and it was not clear whether the Kremlin would accept the proposed compromises.
Context of the Negotiations
The US has been mediating the peace process in recent months, aiming to bring both sides to an agreement that could halt hostilities while addressing Ukraine’s security concerns. Zelensky has reportedly offered concessions on some of the most contentious issues that had stalled negotiations, including territorial administration and phased troop withdrawals, though specifics have not been publicly disclosed.
No immediate confirmation of the Florida meeting has been issued by the White House. The discussions are expected to be closely watched by European leaders and international observers, given the global implications of a potential settlement.
International Implications
A successful US-mediated agreement could mark a significant breakthrough in ending one of the deadliest conflicts in Europe since World War II. Analysts suggest that any progress achieved during the Florida talks could influence sanctions policies, military aid decisions, and the broader geopolitical balance in the region.
Despite Zelensky’s optimism, analysts warn that reaching a lasting peace will require delicate compromises and sustained international support, especially given Russia’s historically rigid negotiating stance.
Zelensky concluded his press briefing by reaffirming Ukraine’s commitment to diplomacy and peace, stressing that the upcoming discussions with Trump represent an opportunity to move closer to ending the war before the turn of the year.
